First Blog Post!

Hi there! My name is Alyssa DePury, and I am a Sophomore studying Elementary Education at Florida State University. I was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, and I have an amazingly supportive, close family. I am involved in a ministry on campus called CRU, where I lead a Bible study with one of my close friends, and I also live at and participate in activities put on by the Southern Scholarship Foundation. Some things I really enjoy doing are traveling, being in nature, watching the sunset, grabbing a cup of coffee, and hanging out with friends. I also am obsessed with animals of any kind, so you might be able to find me petting a dog on campus! :) I absolutely love and connect with kids, and I am so excited to get my degree so that I can fully begin pursuing my passion.

I have had a lot of experience working with technology for educational purposes. In most of my high-school classes, my teachers would use projectors in order for the whole class to see slides of what we were learning. Also, because I went to such a small school, I ended up taking some online AP classes through Florida Virtual School. In these classes, I had to submit homework and do all of my assignments online. I also had to have conversations with my long-distance teachers over the phone. One experience I had where a teacher used technology in a really cool way was in my AP Literature class at my school. My teacher let each of us use an ipad, and we were able to flip through interactive slides in order to really engage with the content we were learning.

In this class I hope to learn many things. Because I want to be an elementary teacher, I would like to learn how technology and specific programs can engage younger children in order to help them focus better and enjoy learning. I would also like to have a proficiency in simple computer processes, such as Microsoft Word and slideshows so that I can best be prepared for my future career. I would love to be able to learn how I can use technology to further involve parents in their kids' educational lives, such as through making fun newsletters or informative blogs. Lastly, I want to know how we can harness technology so that it becomes an asset and a tool rather than a distraction to others. I am extremely excited to start the process of this semester, so be looking out for more blog posts soon!

  1. Hi Alyssa! I love how you included pictures in your blog, I really want to learn how to do that! It seems like we have similar goals within this class, so I'm super excited to see more posts from you and how you use and interpret what we learn in class :)
